Kingyo / Edmund Yeo / Drama / 2009 / English subtitles
Kingyo, which is Japanese for goldfish, is Yeo's contemporary take on the classic short story "Canaries" by the Nobel Prize laureate author Yasunari Kawabata. Ex-lovers — professor and his female student — meet a year later after their affair in an attempt to discover the reasons of their failed relationship. The director uses split screen technique to reveal the subtext in the characters' dialogues and thus keeping the atmosphere of the original story.
This film was part of the International Short Film Competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2009.
The House of Small Cubes / Kunio Kato / Animation / 2008 / English subtitles
As his town is flooded by water, an old man is forced to add additional levels to his home. When he accidentally drops his smoking pipe into the lower levels of his home, he dives into the lower levels that turn to be forgotten corners of his memory.
Apart from many other awards, this film won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2009.

A Happy Thermometer / Mina Yonezawa / Animation / 2008
It seems we have chosen the wrong world to procreate. In fact, we had no choice.
A Happy Thermometer is an animated tragicomedy by Mina Yonezawa.
Music by Takashi Watanabe, Midori Kurata, Keitarou Iijima.
Babin is a recent work by the Japanese surrealist Isamu Hirabayashi in which he gives an outlook on the world in his unique style, creating an irrational and amusing drama. Once again the director, famous for his love of nature, assigns human qualities to an inanimate object and sets us thinking that even a tree can have an extraordinary personality. The film tells a story of a strange man with the lower part of his body buried in the ground.
Two awards at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2008.

In creating the atmosphere, apart from the director's own innovations, a prominent part is created by the music composed by the award-winning Ryuichi Sakamoto and the camera work of Taishi Hirokawa who is also a professional photographer.
The film won three awards at the 57th Locarno International Film Festival in 2004: FIPRESCI Prize, Special Prize of the Jury, and Youth Jury Award.
Good news for all you stencils lovers. During the break everyone can order a stencil print of a character from the movies on a t-shirt or bag (those will be available on-site).
